Clint Dempsey: The $60m Dollar Man

Clint Dempsey, an American international and keen rapper became an instant Fulham hero with his crucial strike against Liverpool on Saturday.

His first goal in Fulham colours in front of a packed Hammersmith End, could be described as the most important goal in 128 years of Fulham history.

Other Fulham fans may point to Roger Brown (v Lincoln) or Rodney McAree (v Carlisle) or even Sean Davis(v Blackburn), but there is no doubt that Dempsey's first goal for Fulham will be hard to surpass in terms of value.

His goal will net Fulham a minimum of £30m next season and it is unlikely that he will score a more important goal in his career.

Many Fulham fans had seen an impressive montage of Clint Dempsey on You Tube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzOgcTYGG1E), but the man who bought him to Europe Chris Coleman seemed loathe to unleash him in the Premiership.

Trying to adapt to the English game is hard enough, but Dempsey, lacking match fitness and being asked to make an impact as a substitute in an unfamilair wide role had offered little sign of the legendary status soon to be bestowed upon him.

A decent performance as a sub against Arsenal in a more central role a couple of weeks ago, hinted at better things to come, and any doubts amongst the Fulham faithful were quashed on Saturday when 'Deuce' underlined the growing American influence by the banks of the Thames.

A look at Fulham's goals this season, shows how important Team USA is to the Fulham cause.

Top scorer Brian McBride has 9, Carlos Bocanegra has 5 and now Clint Dempsey has got in on the act. In fact over 40% of Fulham's league goals this season have come from American's.

Perhaps Fulham's new manager (whoever is appointed) should scour the United States to pick up a couple more bargain buys
